Accessibility statement for ‘Renew your short-term medical driving licence’
This accessibility statement applies to https://www.gov.uk/renew-medical-driving-licence
This website is run by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard or speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible is this website?
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:
- A timeout is implemented throughout the service without giving a warning or giving users the ability to extend their session. When the timeout is triggered, all information is lost and the user must start from the beginning. This is difficult for users that may struggle to enter information in quick succession.
- Colour contrast, although good through most of the site, is not highly contrasted on keyboard focus highlighting.
- Aria-expanded has been put on some elements when the element did not present additional content upon activation; this can easily disorientate and confuse screen reader users as nothing new is presented on the page.
- Keyboard users are unable to access content due to the page refreshing when some elements are activated.

Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to non-compliances - this means the content in question is in scope of the regulations, but there’s an accessibility problem with it.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons: non-compliances - this means the content in question is in scope of the regulations, but there’s an accessibility problem with it.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations;
- All non-text content that is presented to users does not have a text alternative that serves the equivalent purpose. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1(non –text content).
- Information, structure, and relationships conveyed through the service cannot be programmatically determined or available in text. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1(Info and relationships).
- All functionality of the content is not operable through a keyboard interface without requiring specific timings for individual keystrokes, except where the underlying function requires input that depends on the path of the users movement and not just the endpoints. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1.1(keyboard).
- Time out limits are set by the content. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.2.1(Timing adjustable).
- A mechanism is not available to bypass blocks of content that are repeated on multiple Web pages. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.1(Timing adjustable).
- If an input error is automatically detected, the item that is in error is not identified and the error is not described to the user in text. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 3.3.1(Error identification).
- In content implemented using mark-up languages, elements do not have complete start and end tags, elements are not nested according to their specifications, elements may contain duplicate attributes, and any IDs are unique, except where the specifications do not allow these features. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.1(Parsing).
- For all user interface components (including but not limited to form elements, links and components generated by scripts), the name and role cannot be programmatically determined; states, properties, and values that can be set by the user cannot be programmatically set; and notification of changes to these items is unavailable to user agents, including assistive technologies. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2(Name, Role, and Value).
- In content implemented using mark-up languages, status messages cannot be programmatically determined through role or properties such that they can be presented to the user by assistive technologies without receiving focus. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.3 (Status messages).
Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations
PDFs and other documents
This information is provided in our Accessible documents policy
Live video
We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations
Disproportionate burden
We believe that fixing the accessibility problems with some content would be disproportionate because the relevant platform will be retired soon as we are transitioning to new arrangements.
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
DVLA is working to improve the accessibility of all its services. Our newer services will be updated to ensure compliance to Accessibility standards. Our older services are being reviewed with the aim to replace them with simpler, more accessible services.
